Peter Neal is a renowned writer of detective novels, which recently has just published his latest work entitled Tenebre, who goes to Rome in order to publicize his novel in that city. A girl is brutally murdered by a man which is not seen more than his glove black. The murderer sends a letter to the newcomer Peter Neal, who immediately gets in touch with a couple of local detectives, who are in charge of the case and look to the writer. Apparently the murderer is committing his crimes as it describes the novel by Neal, showing his obsession with the writer, mainly following methods.
Tenebrae is the result of returning to the genre giallo director, after having walked for some years by the more mysterious side of horror and fantasy, as seen in "Suspiria". Basically, Tenebre unfolds on the conventions typical of sub genre, both aesthetic and narrative, which suggests nothing wrong, however, is a film that can be enjoyed from beginning to end. The appearance and the amount of characters through history will add more intensity to the plot, holding that one goes deeper into the stories and relationships between characters, stories ranging from childhood trauma, sexual, relationship problems, deceit , coupled with the sinister evil of the mind of a murderer, of which little is known about the track and continue to clarify the situation.
- The film received different names, some of them were Dark, Shadow, Under the Eyes of the Assassin and Tenebrae.
- The famous actor Christopher Walken could have occupied the role of Peter Neal
